Many people are not aware that regardless of filtration systems, water tanks need to be cleaned every 1-2 years as almost all water tank manufacturers recommend.

Even with gutter guards, strainers and leaf eaters in place, some derbies and sediments can get past that buildup at the bottom of your tank and begin to decay creating a thick layer of sludge. This is bacterial breeding grounds.

Tanks are designed with their outlet to be a few centimeters from the ground to avoid this, but if left too long, the buildup and bacteria that grows will pass that point of the outlet and starts to create problems for pumps, appliances and degrades your filtration systems extremely quickly.

If your water tanks are not being attended to as recommended, the bottom of your harvested water

starts to rot and give off a muddy smell that mixes into your water. This smell develops because of

the bacteria and chlorine present in the water. This smell is an immense invitation to foreign agents in the water tanks (e.g. insects, mosquitoes, flies, lizards, frogs etc.) that are able to enter your tanks regardless of how well you try to seal your tanks. These foreign agents contribute towards the sludge buildup as well as infect your water making it unsafe to use regardless of filtration systems.

We cannot express enough how important a clean tank is, for the longevity of your pumps, your appliances and for filtration systems to work as they should and the filters to last longer, a clean tank WILL mean cleaner water.Â
